Item Build Description
Additional information on the items
Sona has a nice array of nice items to choose from depending on her team composition and the threats present in the enemy team.
Archangel's Staff
: You should always get this as first item, the stats that it gives are perfect for Sona, once you fully stack your
Tear of the Goddess
all your mana problems will be over, the extra Ability Haste is extremely useful in the mid game, so be sure to get this item as soon as possible.
Staff of Flowing Waters
: Sona is an enchanter so she becomes even more useful with the right items, be sure to buy this item if your team has a strong spellcaster hypercarry like
Kennen
,
Ziggs
or
Fizz
.
If your team doesn't have any strong spellcaster you can swap this item with
Ardent Censer
to empower your basic attack reliant champions like
Kai'sa
or
Fiora
.
Crystalline Reflector
: Sona is a very squishy champ and is often targeted by assassins, this new item is perfect to protect yourself from champions like
Rengar
or
Zed
while also increasing your damage.
If the enemy team has no physical damage threats swap this item with
Athene's Unholy Grail
to get even more heals along with some useful magic resistance.
Rabadon's Deathcap
: This is the item that turns Sona from a simple enchanter into a full fledged ap threat capable of both incredible damage and high utility.
The extra AP allows you to heal more, shield more and most importantly: blow them up.
Void Staff : If you managed to get to this point then you are a force to be reckoned with, this item allows you to destroy tanks and carries alike.
Redeeming Enchant
: This enchant is extremely strong because not only you can heal your teammates, you can also damage every enemy inside the teamfight.
[Locket enchant] is also useful but in my opinion the reediming enchant is stronger for two main reasons: it's cheaper and it can also be used to gain vision in a zone without wards if it's really needed.
Sona Runes
Best Runes for Sona
Standard rune setup for Sona.
Font of Life : grants you extra sustain for you and your allies, I personally use this keystone rune every time.
Brutal : increases your early utilty and damage, a little boost for your laning phase.
Adaptive Carapace : early hp and adaptive resistances, perfect to survive the enemy aggression.
Manaflow Band : the extra mana can be a real life saver in the first minutes of the match, later on it can still be useful as the extra mana turns into ap if you build Archangel's Staff
I use this setup if I plan on scaling as much as possible while trying to survive a dire situation in lane.
Gathering Storm : gives you extra ap throughout the game and becomes way more useful than Brutal after 12 minutes in the game.
Loyalty : A solid choice for any support, the extra resistances can make your laning phase safer.

Combos
Learn how to maximize the champions potential
Standard poke combo in early, use the first ability to deal damage and empower your next autoattack, if used with your passive the damage will further increase.
Use this combo once the enemy assassin jumps on your carries or your're somehow close to the enemy carry, once you hit your enemy with this combo their damage dealt will decrease.
Only use this combo if you are chasing a running enemy.
Sona Matchups & Counters
Detailed information on how to play matchups and counters
Poke him and try to keep your distance, don't be too cocky and he won't give you too much trouble.
Early game
Sona's early game is really weak, try to poke with your Hymn Of Valor from afar, if the enemy is busy attacking a minion try to sneak in a basic attack here and there after using Hymn Of Valor because this ability also empowers your next attack, be careful while doing, you don't wanna lose half of your health just for some damage.
Try to use Aria Of Perseverance only when it's really needed, don't use it to heal an 80% hp adc, the mana cost is really high and spamming it can be dangerous for your laning phase.
Unlock Song Of Celerity at level 4 and put the level 3 point on Hymn Of Valor so you can deal some extra damage, the movement speed boost is not really useful the first levels and the mana cost is really high so you don't need it right away.
Tip: right at the beginning of the game purchase a Sapphire Crystal and use use Hymn Of Valor , this way you will get a tiny bit of mana and a charge of Power Chord .
Mid game
Once you get your Seraph's Embrace your damage and utility will start to skyrocket, stay as close as possible to your teammates and save your Crescendo for the next dragon team fight.
Even with the Seraph's Embrace Sona is extremely frail so never wander alone and during fights stay behind your frontline and spam your abilities like crazy, don't be afraid to use your [flash] at the slightest sign of danger, sometimes the enemy assassin can kill you even when you think you can survive his damage so better not risk it.
Late game
Now it's your time to shine, if you already have your
Rabadon's Deathcap
then you can literally obliterate anyone in your path, your shields will be huge and the enemy will be caught off guard by your damage.
Don't get me wrong, you are still frail and suffer heavily from hard engages, but now you can fight back way harder than before.
