You have different options as starting items.
• Long sword, so your attacks will pack quite a punch!
• Cloth armour, if you need to survive lane until your ultimate power spike.
• Null magic mantle, I don’t recommend starting with it because of your W and low damage of mages before ultimate spikes, but against AP top and jungle it can be decent.
• Boots of Speed, if you want to get a cheater recall at level 4 and come back for that level 5 engage!

• Black Cleaver is an easy choice given the Phage passive and Garen’s ability to instantly (almost) apply all the shred stacks with his E in a matter of seconds.

• Yommu’s gives an insane amount of movement speed out of combat and your next auto will deal extra magic damage, providing more burst and allowing the enemies to struggle to itemise against you.

• DMP (Dead Man’s Plate) is the armour version of Yommu’s, and they stack with each other! Your next auto will deal up to 100 magic damage and slow the target. And you really like that.

• Sterak’s Gage (Ster-ak... ahah) helps you survive deadly combos from burst mages or Darius’ dunks, provides good offensive and defensive stats.

• Spirit Visage is your best option against mages because this item’s passive synergises with your passive.

If you need more magic resistance, you can swap DMP with Adaptive Helm.

Boots choice:
• Tabis into AA users;
• Mercs into heavy CC;
• Swiftness if you feel you can survive without more defensive stuff and you don’t like being slowed.
